Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is SolCue?
SolCue is a circadian rhythm tracker for Apple Watch that helps you optimize your light exposure by showing real-time sun position and highlighting prime light windows around sunrise and sunset.
Q: Why does SolCue need location access?
SolCue uses your location to calculate accurate sunrise and sunset times specific to your geographic area. Without location access, the app uses default times for Providence, Rhode Island. Your location data never leaves your device and is not stored or shared.
Q: How do I change color themes?
You can change themes in two ways: (1) Rotate the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch, or (2) Tap the colored dots at the bottom of the screen. There are 4 themes to choose from: Natural, Cosmic Purple, Ocean Blue, and Midnight.
Q: What are the "prime light windows"?
Prime light windows are the 2-hour periods around sunrise and sunset when light exposure has the greatest impact on your circadian rhythm. Morning light exposure during this window can improve sleep quality, mood, focus, and overall health. The clock gently pulses during these windows to remind you.
Q: How do I read the 24-hour clock?
The clock displays a full 24-hour day with midnight at the top. The sun indicator shows the sun's current position. Different colored segments represent twilight zones (astronomical, nautical, civil) and daylight hours. Golden/orange segments show the extended prime light windows.
Q: Why does the clock pulse?
The clock pulses gently during prime light windows (around sunrise and sunset) as a subtle reminder to spend time outdoors. This is a behavioral nudge, not a notification. The pulsing is intentionally slow and calming.
Q: Does SolCue track my outdoor time?
Version 1.0 focuses on awareness and education. It shows you when prime light windows occur but doesn't actively track your outdoor time. Future versions may include optional tracking features. Let us know what you think.
Q: Why does the sun turn red/orange after sunset?
This visual change reflects nature—sunsets often appear red or orange. It's one of the "surprise and delight" features that help you stay connected to natural light cycles throughout the day.
Troubleshooting
The app isn't showing my location's sunrise/sunset times
Solution:Open Settings on your Apple WatchGo to Privacy & Security → Location ServicesFind SolCue in the listEnsure it's set to "While Using the App"Restart the appIf location services are denied, the app will show times for Providence, Rhode Island (the default location).
The clock isn't pulsing during prime windows
Check:Make sure you're actually in a prime light window (2 hours around sunrise or sunset)The pulse is very subtle and slow (8 seconds per cycle)—watch carefullyTry restarting the app
Hour labels are hard to read
Note: The labels are intentionally subtle to maintain a clean aesthetic. Apple Watch's brightness settings affect readability—try increasing screen brightness in bright outdoor conditions. If this is a persistent issue, please contact us. We're gathering feedback and may adjust sizing in future updates.
Battery draining quickly
Expected behavior: SolCue should use less than 10% battery over 8 hours of normal use. If battery drain is excessive:Restart your Apple WatchMake sure watchOS is up to dateContact us with details about usage patterns
